Kerrie, The company that is conducting the seismic testing is very disorganized and has never worked in this area before. They are a subcontractor for an energy company based in Houston that has purchased all the mineral rights in and around Craig.

The subcontractor did not conduct any background research before sending out the mass mailer requesting access to property in and around Craig. I have seen some of their plans and there is nothing in place for avoiding structures and wells. It is just lines on a map across the entire Yampa Valley around and in Craig. It looks like they plan to drive thumper trucks right down the streets of Craig. This would seriously compromise sewer and water lines. This is obviously not going to happen but it shows how incompetent this company’s current plan is.

The mailers are a common tactic used by these types of companies to get surface use agreements in place. The state of Colorado requires an undertaking such as this to have surface use agreements in place before a permit can be issued. That being said, they don’t need total agreement just a certain level of agreement from a portion of the total landowners effected. This demonstrates to the state that they have conducted a reasonable effort to get access. These mailers were accompanied by a small insulting bribe of like $50 or something. Unfortunately, a lot of people will send these agreements in.

So, where do we go from here? I suggest working within the system is probably the most productive path. Negotiate a strong surface use agreement that includes generous buffers to your structures, wells, and septic systems. If you have a well make sure it is tested before, during, and after the seismic study. If enough people craft these kinds of agreements it will be hard for the company to really do any testing in the more residential areas (like Thompson Hill).

Everyone that has concerns should attend the next county land board meeting. This company should have placed announcements in the paper and held some public meetings about what they are planning to do. At the moment they are just testing the waters. If they can get enough people to sign these agreements then they will be able to do whatever they want regardless if you signed an agreement or not.

I more concerned about the results of this study. Extracting natural gas through fracking is dangerous to water wells. Wastewater left on the surface is toxic and an eyesore. There is nothing these companies have to do about the value of your home decreasing due to an ugly well. Lets fight this thing in the beginning. If you don’t believe this is a threat then please do a little research about what has happened to the residents of Silt Colorado.

No bank anywhere was forced to give anybody a loan. Banks knew they were making bad loans, made them anyways, repackaged them and sold them off. Then nobody knew the value of any of these financial derivatives. That's what kick started the financial meltdown. Its easy to blame poor people but they are not the thieves that took everybody's money. Politicians, Democrats and Republicans line their pockets with special interest money from the same people who tore down the system to pretend that this all happened in the last two years is naive.

The Antlers are likely not even from the monument and were brought in as fun props for this photo. Do you really think there would be that many antlers lying around at this location for them to pick up for this photo?

Why cant the coal just be sold to other plants? It seems to me that the demand for coal is not going away anytime soon?

religion = peace of mind for those scared about their own mortality

If believing in god(s) is what makes you happy then do it but do not try and scare others into it to validate your own insecurities.

For those of you that are believers, Jesus sounds like a socialist to me? Is this correct? I thought I heard someone say socialists were Nazis and also somehow Muslim, so does that make Jesus a Nazi Muslim? No offense intended, I am just asking?

Better than Dan (the bikes are coming to get you) Maes and Tom (lets blame Mexcio for everything) Tancredo but is this really the best conservatives in Colorado can do? How do we know anything thing this guys says is not stolen from somebody else?
